COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TREASURER’S REPORT: Dorothy South reported she has started receiving membership dues and has made some deposits and has paid a couple bills and has paid for the mailing expenses from last month.

According to our by-laws the annual dues are $30.00 a year and are currently due to be paid in September. You can pay them as late as October. If you have not paid your dues as of November 1, you will be taken off the roster. We currently have 75 members in the club.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Stan Bond - There were no corrections or additions to the newsletter and Stan did not have anything else to report.

VICE PRESIDENT’S /ACTIVITIES REPORT: Kurt Meier

Kurt recognized Tom Keen, who is a member of the Ft. Thomas Corvette club, and has been our benefactor for a number of years in that he sponsors our newsletter and makes a very generous donation to defray the cost of the newsletter.

Kurt mentioned that Cliff Barber put together a rally up to the MidOhio racetrack a couple of weeks ago. Cliff got on the Corvette Forum Internet site, put together a few stops between Cincinnati and the racecourse and by the time he was done he had about 20 corvettes in a row going up to the racetrack. It was a great caravan.

Doug reported once they got there, they went to the paddock area and got into the garage area where all the corvettes were lined up and the crew standing around. Kurt Meier, being the shy one, went over and started talking to the crew chief. Kurt told him we would like to tour their race shop in Michigan and so what started out a nice drive for a day helped us start putting a great winter program together. There is a possibility that we may take a bus tour leaving on a Friday morning to view the Pratt Miller facility, try to link up with GM to do something with them and then come back home on Saturday afternoon. The most thrilling event at the race was watching both Corvettes, back-to-back, roar past a Dodge Viper. The whole place just went absolutely crazy.

Webb’s Picnic – The rain kept a lot of people from attending this picnic. John Ullman said that although it was raining when they left to drive to Webb’s place, the weather was fine at the picnic. It was a shame that more people were not able to make the picnic.

National Corvette Museum Bowling Green Celebration – Kurt was very appreciative of the members of the club that came to the celebration. A record was set for the most C1’s - 53, 54, and 55 Corvettes assembled together since the end of the C1 production.

Zora Arkus-Duntov - Surprising enough Zora Arkus-Duntov owned one Corvette in his lifetime. It happened to be a 1974 Corvette that is now in pretty sad condition and is owned by the museum. The facility manager of the Museum said that he is looking for a club to undertake the sponsorship of restoration of the only car that Zora Arkus-Duntov ever owned. The Queen City NCRS has decided to commit their club to help us in the restoration of this Corvette. Kurt made proposal that we, in conjunction with the Queen City Chapter of the NCRS, commit to the restoration of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s car. This would be a chassis restoration. The car will be on display at the museum once all the restoration has been completed.

Sunday, September 23 – Wood Hudson Cancer Research Art & Entertainment Show – Located at St. Paul Church at 4th & York Street in Newport Kentucky. It is next to the Old Victorian Courthouse in Newport. Please plan to be there from 1:00pm – 3:00pm on Sunday. It would be great to have about 10-15 cars to take part in the show. It is a very important organization that is trying to help find a cure for cancer and also a chance to show off our Corvettes.

Saturday, October 13 – Dorothy South is planning a cruise in and car show at the Cold Springs Roadhouse on US 27. It will be open to all types of cars. We will probably have a disc jockey to provide music. Entry fee is $5 per car. The first 50 cars will receive dash plaques. Trophies will be given to the best GM, best Ford, best Chrysler, best original, best Corvette, best street rod and best restored. We can register for the car show between 4:00 & 5:00. Judging will take place between 5:00 – 7:00. At 7:00 a room will be made available at the Roadhouse to have dinner and socialize. At 9:00 the Roadhouse is going to bring in a band that will be playing until midnight This is a great chance to show our apprecation the the Roadhouse for letting us have our monthly meetings at their facility.

Doug Schwegman would like to see a great turnout for this event. Ask your friends to bring their cars and join in the fun. They can come out for a couple of hours, show off their cars, have dinner and stay to enjoy the music in the evening. Summer is winding down and we will not be able to show our cars off much longer after October. For more information contact Dorothy South at 859-781-0126 or DSOUTH4760@AOL.COM.

Sunday, October 14 October Run – Bill Hengstebeck has put together a great road rally for us again this year. We will leave 40 North Grand Avenue promptly at 12:00. We will drive to Madison Indiana which is a very pretty drive. Hopefully by that time the trees will be turning to fall colors. Madison Indiana is a beautiful town by the river and there some antiques shops there also. We will leave Madison at 5 pm and drive to Belterra for a buffet dinner at approximately 5:30. Dinner is buffet style and includes coffee, iced tea and soft drinks. Price per person is $13.60 including tax. Alcoholic beverages will be available at an additional charge. Tipping should also be handled on your own. We will be seated as a group in the gazebo area; however, we will not attempt to seat everyone at one or two large tables.

Last year Bill and Kathy put together a great run to Metamora Indiana and I know everyone had a great time. We hope this year that the weather cooperates and everyone shows up for one of the best events of the year.

November 4 - Kentucky Speedway Bill Hengstebeck let the club know that on November 4 at the Kentucky Speedway if you go into the gift shop and spend $40 you can drive 3 laps of the track at 85 plus mph in your car.

November 11 - Toys for Tots Run - Tom Keen is sponsoring a car run starting at the World Peace Bell in Newport Ky. More details will be available at the October meeting regarding this event.

WEBSITE NEWS: Jon Hanas reported that our new website is up and running again. Everyone has told him it is better, quicker and more reliable. Thanks again Jon for all the time you spend making the website so great.

Another thanks to Jon Hanas from Stan and Rita Bond for getting rid of a virus that hit our computer before we could complete the Newsletter. Jon spent about 4 hours working on our computer to get rid of the bull’s eye that took over our computer.

NEW BUSINESS– Kurt Meier so kindly proposed that Rita Bond volunteer to become the new archivest for the club.

Doug Schwegman said that the Board decided to form a nomination committee headed by Stan Bond to find a number of people who might want to run for an office in the club. If any member has an inkling or would be willing to serve in some capacity in the club, please give Stan Bond a call at 859-525-6479. If he does not receive any calls, the nomination committee will be soliciting your support in running for office. If anyone is interested in being part of the nominating committee give Stan a call. He will be very happy to have your help.

Christmas Party – John Ullman agreed to assist Dorothy South in planning the Christmas Party this year.

Kurt Meier said that he saw Jim Bischoff a few days ago. Jim was scheduled to have surgery on his shoulder which he has needed for sometime when he tore a miniscus in one of his knees. He was walking with a walker when Kurt saw him. Please keep Jim in your prayers and we all wish him a speeding recovery.

DENTED HUB CAP AWARD - I think we need to get two dented hub cabs to award each month. One for Bob to keep and one to award each month. It seems that Bob Adams went up on a curb, busted his right rear tire and scratched up two rims. See Bob for all the details.

SPLIT-THE-POT -Picked by Bob Adams and won by Stan Bond $20.00. Congratulations!!

C5 FUEL GAUGE GREMLINS

On the way to the Labor Day event at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky last weekend I experienced what I thought was an isolated electrical gremlin in my ’98 6-speed coupe.

About 50 miles South of Cincinnati, with a full tank of gas, I heard a warning chime go off and a low fuel alert appear on my Digital Information Center. I looked at the gas gauge and it read Empty (it read Full only a few seconds prior to this). "Rats" I thought – my fuel gauge has crapped out.

About a 100 miles down the road after stopping at a rest stop and restarting the car, everything was back to normal --- for about 20 miles when the same thing happened again. "Rats" -- I made a mental note to myself to ask the GM Engineers in Bowling Green about the problem when I arrived at the museum.

At the museum the head of GM Corvette quality control was at the GM Engineering display and to my surprise he was very familiar with the problem. He said that this condition was just starting to show up frequently in the C5, and especially in those states with reformulated cleaner burning gas. The problem is that the fuel sender is a potentiometer (a mechanical wiper that rubs along a series of copper wires to determine fuel level from the varying circuit resistance) – the new gas creates an insulating coating on the wires breaking the electrical connection. As soon as the connection is broken the computer thinks the tank is empty and locks in that value until the computer is reset (by restarting the car). He also said that ALL C5’s are susceptible to this problem and there was currently no known fix although they expect to have a solution sometime in the next several months. He indicated that the problem would correct itself if you switched back to a gas that didn’t tend to coat the wires, although he couldn’t predict which brand might be better than another.

All of a sudden it made sense. The week before I had driven from the Corvette show in Carlisle, PA back to Cincinnati without refueling (about 450 miles). I only had about 1.5 gallons of fuel left, so I filled up at a Superamerica station near my house – this is the first time I have ever used this brand of gas. It’s

also the first time I’ve ever had this problem. In Bowling Green I filled up at a Shell station prior to returning home – the problem recurred once then went away (hopefully for good).
