The Vette Gazette
Ft. Thomas Corvette Club
Monthly Meeting
Tuesday, October 10, 2000
Officers:
President: Doug Schwegman
Vice President: Kurt Meier
Secretary: Stan Bond
Treasurer: Dorothy South
We would like to welcome the following guests. Gary Callioni (guest of Gary &
Judy Benke) who has a C5 yellow Vette… Gerry & Jenna Wellbrock (guest of Gary
& Judy Benke) C5 Pewter 99 Vette…Bill Seibert, who has also been a past
president of the club, is attending the meeting this evening. We are all
glad to see him back.
Welcome to the Club!
Two other guests we have tonight are Gary Mulligan and Joe Amann from the
McCormick Auto Area Technology Center. Joe is the principal of the school
and Gary is the director. These gentlemen represent the vocational school
that the club has adopted as a partner in our club and we want to contribute
to their scholarship fund. Jim Bischoff presented a gift of $250 to the
school to use at their discretion.
Gary Mulligan thanked the club for their contribution on behalf of the
school, staff, principal, faculty and especially the students. The young
man that he picked was really tight for funds. He is attending the
University of North Western Ohio which used to be North Western Auto Diesel.
Now that they have University status he can get a Bachelor's degree in
automotive technology. That is a real good thing in the automotive trade
right now because we need top quality technicians. The young man used the
money to help pay for his books and the kid was almost in tears when he
called him to tell him about it.
Mr. Mulligan said that anytime we want to bring out a car to their facility
and use their equipment we are more than welcome. The students would be more
than happy to assist you in working on your car, but you must do the work
yourself. Brochures are available for anyone who is interested in learning
more about the school and it programs. Gary Mulligan asked us to keep in
mind that the vocational school has a big cruise in on the third Saturday of
April. We give away $25.00 every 15 -20 minutes. They have WGRR radio as DJ
out there. Most of the time they have at least 250 cars. If we let him
know we are coming as a group, he will reserve an area for our Corvettes.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
SECRETARY'S REPORT: Stan Bond reported we have name tags for everyone
except the newer members which should be available at the November meeting.
We hope that everyone received a copy of the September newsletter. If not,
please let him know. Since there were no comments, additions or
corrections to the minutes, they stand approved.
KEEPER OF THE BANNER: Bob Adams agreed to be the keeper of the banner this
coming year.
TREASURER'S REPORT: Dorothy South reported that when she took over the
books the balance was $3030.92 in the treasury We had deposits this month
from dues. We had some expenditures for the newsletter, paid the rent for
the post office, a 5.00 refund for overpaid dues, the gift to the McCormick
school and we sent cookies to Frisch's for their work with us when we had the
kids over there. The current balance $2717.08. If anyone wants to see a
more detailed report, she would be happy to provide one for you . Her name
will be in the newsletter so feel free to call her and she can send one to
you.
Currently the dues are $30 per member. If dues are not paid by November 1st
you will be dropped from the roster. Dorothy will be calling those whom she
thinks have not paid there dues to verify this information Doug encouraged
everyone to pay their dues. It helps to keep the roster and name tags
current and makes it a lot easier to keep things in order. Please make
payment to FORT THOMAS CORVETTE CLUB, INC, and mail to our post office box,
Attention: Dorothy South.
PAST EVENTS
Campbell Lodge Boys School: Doug Schwegman
We went to Campbell Lodge and had a great time. These kids were so excited
about riding in those cars that they thought they would never even have a
chance to touch. I thank you for doing that because I really enjoyed it and
they did also. One of the things they said was that a lot of people give
money, but not their time. You gave us your time taking us for a ride and
sitting and talking with us at dinner and took us back and I'm going to have
a Corvette when I get older.
VICE PRESIDENT/ACTIVITIES REPORT.. Kurt Meier
I have really been looking forward to tonight because I think that in the
very short time this Board has been together we have had a couple of meetings
and have discussed what direction this club wanted to go relative to
activities. I want to thank Todd for sharing the activities over the last
year and I think we are going to carry forward with a nice healthy program
for the upcoming year. There are a couple people that I want to recognize
here tonight. Dr. Browning has been our club physician for a number of years
now and he is with us so I would like the club to welcome Dr. Browning.
Sitting directly across the table from him is Larry Alford who probably
doesn't know this but when I was a kid I used to go out to Frisch's and see
him in that 409 Chevrolet with those side pipes. I tell you that was enough
inspiration to get me involved in cars and racing. Larry has been at this
for a long time and knows more about Corvettes than I can ever dream about
knowing and it is just nice to see Larry in the room as well.
ACTIVITIES FOR THE COMING YEAR:
November - We wanted to do something that would not only carry us through the
summer months that we are traditionally involved in but also keep the
interest going through the winter months. At the next meeting we have
planned a winterization seminar and also a car detailing seminar. I think it
is important since some of the members will be putting their cars up for the
winter to have a little check session about what to do and how to winterize
your car and how to clean up your car, detail it and store it away for the
winter. So it is going to be kind of a double tech session next month.
In addition to that I had an opportunity to talk with Larry Hayes who is the
Activities chair at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. He told
me that last Labor Day they had a number of prototype race cars, development
type cars at the Corvette Museum and they were able to get these cars
together and make a lap on the track over at the factory. They have a 70
minute video of that event so next month we will be showing that video both
before and after the meeting so to that you can see it.
December -- In December the Christmas party will be held at the Cold Springs
Road House on Sunday, December 10……More details in the November newsletter
January - We will appoint a membership committee and fine tune this whole
process, but what we are looking at is going to the Antique Car Shop in
Erlanger, Kentucky and see his operation. He is a member of the club and
since we did this type of thing last year and everybody really got a high
interest out of this we are going to do that in January
February - We are going to take a bus tour to the Corvette museum and I will
assure you that the first thing I did in calling the museum is have Larry
Hayes to make sure it was going to be open for the whole month of February.
Larry is going to give us a private tour of the museum and before we go there
we are going to take a tour of the factory. We will be getting a sneak
preview about this racing chassie that we have been hearing about and they
anticipate that they will take us out to the track at the end of the factory
tour. This will be a bus tour. We usually get 30 to 35 people.
Traditionally, we leave very early in the morning to go down to Bowling
Green. All the way down on the bus we have monitors on the bus and you see
nothing but Corvette racing and movies about Corvettes. We have the option
of having a box lunch at the museum or going into Bowling Green for lunch at
Mariah's and going back to the museum for a private tour. Coming back home
we will stop at Louisville and get about 20 boxes of pizzas and a few of the
amber bottles to drink.
OTHER EVENTS PLANNED: In addition we hope to go to another garage. There is
a place in Springboro Ohio called the Restoration Station. We certainly
intend to visit that facility in the winter months as well.
Securas garage - There were a limited number of people that attended Securas
Garage in the Fairfax area. Everyone has an overwhelming memory of that
experience. We are talking about racers, indy car racers and just regular
other racers from the teens all the way up to the 30's, 40's 50's. That is
quite a garage. People such as Jay Leno use the facility. Zora Arkus-Duntov
was there and sat in a 1948-49 car and took an engraving awl and etched his
name into the metal dashboard of that car.
April - Founder's Day Run -- We are also going to open up the actual car
season with the Founders Day run that has been traditional from the start of
the club. Doug and I sponsor that event and we've got a little surprise, a
little twist and turn, this year as well.
Midsummer -- We have a little surprise as well in the midsummer, Freddy Macke
has arranged that we go down and be the sponsored club for a Kentucky Raceway
race. We will get to drive our cars on the track on race day. That is the
preliminary lineup. That gets us through July 4th. I think that all those
people who were here last year for the July 4th realize how nice it was. We
will continue with that tradition. It was planned last year with absolute
perfection and everybody had a great time.
I want to thank all of those sponsors of all of those events that we have had
over the last 5 years. We started this club really not having a clue about
what we were doing. We've made some mistakes along the way. Our early runs
that we planned compared with what we are doing today look pretty humble and
crude. All of those sponsors have done a great job throughout the years and
have built on the experiences we have had over the years. Anybody who has
been involved from a participation standpoint, we really thank. We hope to
continue this enthusiasm through the year and hope to see a lot of new
members pick up the ball and maybe come up with some fresh new ideas, get
behind them, put on an event, and we can make it even better. That has been
the real life blood of this club to keep the old members involved and yet
pick up the interests of the new membership. We are looking forward to a
pretty spectacular year, we think that we are going to give you as much back
for the buck as we possibly can. I have probably let the cat out of the bag
as well. There is facility up in Dayton Ohio called Delphi. It is a
corporate spin-off of General Motors. They produce such things as the active
handling system and they are really the creative design team for General
Motors and in particular corvettes. We just very well may be taking a trip
up to Dayton Ohio this year and go through that Delphi plant as well and
learn about some of the cutting edge technical stuff that has been going on.
With all of that we think that we have a nice broad outline for a great year.
We would welcome any participation on the activities committee. I will be
contacting those people that I know who have had an interest in the past and
for those of you who may have an interest that I don't know about just bang
on me and say put my name on the list and I will be sure to call you for that
activities meeting. With all of that , I just want to thank everybody who
has done whatever for the club in the past and say we are going to have a
great year.
November 2000 -- Doug Schwegman Kurt is such a forward thinking individual
and that is why he overlooked Bill Hengsteck's run this month to Metamora,
Indiana on October 22. For those people who don't know, what we try to do in
this club is use the cars and have fun with them. We try to take them on
runs driving on two lane roads which is kind of fun to feel the corvettes and
what they can do. As we schedule these events, we try to find something that
is of common interests, obviously you cannot find something that appeals to
everyone, so not everyone is always interested. We are always looking for
new ideas because we have come across the darnedst things that I didn't even
know existed. If you have any ideas, please don't hesitate to call Kurt, who
is anxiously sitting by his phone waiting for your call.
Dented Hub Cap Award - Doug Schwegman This award is presented to various
members of our club who have had difficulties in one fashion or another.
Unfortunately, a member who is not here tonight is the recipient of this
award. His name is Cliff Barber. I will tell you real quickly. We made a
road trip up to Lingenfelter, an engine modifier, in Auburn, Indiana. Cliff
had the distinction of subjecting his corvette to a stress test. Cliff put
his nice shiny black Corvette on there and they ran it and it made a lot of
racket. After they got a nice reading on their computer the engineers told
Cliff how great and wonderful things were. They told him they were going to
run a second test. Finally, the engineer jumped back in and fired it up
again and shut it off again It was dead still. Cliff's jaw dropped. I
tried to console Cliff telling him that if something was going to happen this
was the nice place to have it happen. They had just given us a lecture on
how much it cost to fix cars there. To their credit what they did was go
back in and try it again and there was no oil pressure registering on the
gauge. They immediately descended on his car, pulled the pressure gauge off,
put another pressure gauge on it and it was in fact registering pressure. It
was just that the gauge was stuck.
If you get a chance to go to Decatur and tour the facility, you will find
they are very knowledgeable and it is kind of exciting to see the work that
they do
Doug got a call from Gary Budke who had worked at Kerry Chevrolet for a
while. He now has a barn garage that he stores race cars in. He has room
for eight cars if anyone wants to store cars. It is heated, alarmed and
clean. He does have some restrictions. You have to have less than two
gallons of fuel in your car. He charges 1000.00 a year. You can take your
car in and out as long as you do it other than normal working hours. He is
home in the morning and evening. If you don't want to put it in there for 12
months, he charges $150 a month.
CLOTHING COMMITTEE - Lands End - It is a catalog clothing outfit in
Wisconsin called Lands End Corporate Sales. They will take our club logo and
put it on any item in this catalog. The club member can call Lands End with
our ID number and order anything they want in the catalog. There is a 5.00
charge to put the club logo on the items. We are recognizing this as our
clothing program. We plan to submit our logo to Lands End and we will be
getting back with you as to what our ID number will be. The Directors will
solicit people to be on the clothing committee to select a shirt, sweater and
jacket to be the club's official gear.
